As an initial guide, allow around 5–15% of construction cost for architectural services, including interior design. The fee depends on your project’s size, complexity and scope, with smaller or more complex projects generally sitting toward the higher end.
At Align, we confirm a fixed fee for the agreed scope following Sketch Design. Consultant fees, council charges and other approval costs are additional.
As early as possible, ideally before making major decisions about your property, layout or budget. Early architectural advice helps you understand the opportunities, identify constraints and establish a realistic direction. You don’t need a finished brief to start a conversation with us.

We collaborate with a builder early to assess the existing building, explore design possibilities and understand how different options affect construction and cost. This helps us make informed decisions about what to retain, what to change and where your investment will have the greatest impact. Your brief, budget and the building’s potential inform the design together, creating a home that feels, functions and performs better.

We investigate heritage listings and approval requirements early, so these inform the design from the beginning. Depending on the property and proposed work, We investigate the heritage controls affecting your property early and help you understand the approval pathway and any specialist advice needed.
Yes. Align’s architects provide Passive House (Passivhaus) design across Melbourne and Victoria, for homes, commercial buildings, schools and other project types. We focus on comfort, indoor air quality and energy efficiency.
We were early adopters of Passivhaus in Tasmania, and our CEO, Mitch Emery, co-chairs the Tasmanian chapter of the Australian Passivhaus Association. Our approach combines architectural design with practical construction knowledge.
We establish performance goals early and explore the right approach for your site, how the building will be used, your priorities and budget, including whether to pursue Passivhaus certification.
Yes. At Align, architecture and interiors are designed together as one complete project. We consider the whole building from the beginning, connecting its exterior, internal spaces and details through a cohesive design.

Yes. Our Project Possibilities service helps you understand a property’s potential before you commit to buying. Through a site visit and initial planning investigations, we explore how the property could suit your plans, identifying opportunities, constraints and matters that need further investigation.
Drawing on our architectural and practical construction knowledge, we provide a concise summary and clear guidance on your next steps. It’s also suitable if you already own a property and want to explore what’s possible before committing to design.
We work across the Mornington Peninsula, regional Victoria, Tasmania and elsewhere in Australia. Our approach combines site visits and remote collaboration to suit each project’s location and needs. Get in touch to discuss your property and how we could work together.
